How to use outdoor string lights

String lights can create different atmospheres and trigger different emotions depending on the event and type of lights used.  It is good to know which types are appropriate for which events.  For example, if you are hosting an elegant outdoor event, use small white lights in the trees and bushes to create a soft atmosphere.  If you are hosting a lively birthday party, you will want to go with larger, more colorful, flashing lights.  String them from the roof of your home to the trees to create a starry atmosphere for a romantic dinner.  It takes practice to learn how to use outdoor garden string lights tastefully.
Where to put string lights

You can use them almost anywhere.  Some easy places to string them up on would be fences, trees, the roof of your house, and ledges.  For a more intricate effect, you can string them around the edge of your swimming pool or inside patio umbrellas.  Experiment with lining the garden paths.  Try planting them inside bushes so they seem to glow with little sparkles of light. Decorating with these outdoor decorations is a great opportunity to let your imagination go wild with ideas.

How to string lights on trees

Stringing lights on trees can be dangerous, so you should take the proper safety precautions.  Never climb higher than you are comfortable without a harness or safety net.  To string lights on trees, you are going to have to buy a long string of lights first.  Use a staple gun to fasten the lights on the bark of the tree every few meters up.  Wind up from the bottom around the base of the tree and then onto one of the prominent branches.  Stop when you feel you have light high enough.  Get another string of lights and an extension.  Now, start on the other large branches.  Repeat until the base branches of the tree are lit evenly.  Watch out for poison oak!

Types of decorative outdoor string lights

There are many styles of lights, from hanging bobbles to outdoor lantern string lights.  However, there are only a few types of lights: incandescent, LED electrical, and LED solar.   Each light is different and useful in different situations.  It really depends what you need them for.  For instance, if you are putting up permanent string lights in your garden, you may want to go with the solar energy option since you will be using them regularly.  If you are only using them for a season or event, then it doesn’t really matter what type you get.

Which are best for your needs?

Incandescent lights are cheap initially, but cost more to run.  If you are buying lights for a onetime event, these are for you.  LED lights cost a little more, but save electricity and last longer.  If you are buying Christmas lights and want to use them for a few seasons, then LED outdoor string lights are for you.  Solar lights cost the most initially, but don’t cost anything to run.  If you want to put up lights permanently in your garden or lawn, then solar lights are probably your best option.
